GOOD LUCK CLASS OF 2022!

I can't believe another school year has come and gone! This year has flown by so fast, it feels like I was just getting to know my new group of kids the other day, and now I'm preparing to say goodbye! 

This year has been a lot of fun for me! I have loved interacting with your amazing children as we have explored and learned science together. I appreciate their patience with me as I learned along with them. 

This group of young people truly are the best of the best. As parents, you should be proud. These kids are kind, respectful, caring, and hard working. These are all attributes I know they've learned from great parents and examples in their lives. They also know how to have fun! These kids are going to do great things, and I can't wait to see all they accomplish in their lives!

To "my kids": 

I know technically speaking, none of you are mine, but I would be happy to claim you all. Keep working hard and doing your best. Remember, you all have great potential and will do amazing things if you are willing to put the work in. 

Don't be afraid to come back and see me! I will miss you all like crazy, and I'm sad I have to give you up to the junior high! Continue to be kind, respectful, caring, hardworking, and most of all FUN! 

I appreciate you all more than you will ever know. Thanks for the memories, I will miss you all!

Personal Narrative - March / April Writing

This month we will be writing Personal Narratives. Each student will need to select an actual event from their life they would like to write about. The students will need to bring a picture of this event / memory.

The paper needs to be 5 paragraphs with 5-7 sentences per paragraph.

1^st paragraph- Introduction: this will introduce the memory and catch the reader’s attention.

3 body paragraphs: Tell about the experience and what happened. Include vivid details so the reader feels like they were there.

5^th paragraph- Conclusion:  Tell the reader how everything worked out in the end.

This needs to be written in first person, have a clear beginning, middle and end.  The student should also include how they felt during the event and how they felt after.

Compare and Contrast - January Writing

Compare and Contrast

This month we will be doing a compare and contrast essay. Students have been asked to pick two of their favorite things, or one thing they like and one thing they don't like to compare. 

To start this assignment students need to make a Venn Diagram with their chosen topics. Students need to write 4 paragraphs: introduction paragraph, similarities paragraph, differences paragraph, and concluding paragraph. They need to have a rough draft edited by someone in their home and then type a final copy. 

The final copy should be 12-14 pt. font. Students may choose any font as long as it is legible. In the top right corner of the paper they need the following information:

This paper is DUE January 15th.  Students need to turn in their Venn Diagram and rough draft with their final copy.

November Writing

Thanksgiving is a time of year where many of us focus on being thankful. This month's writing assignment will follow this pattern. Students need to write 5 paragraphs on 3 things they're thankful for. They should have an intro paragraph, their 3 body paragraphs and a concluding paragraph. Each paragraph needs to have 5-7 sentences.

Students need to write about at least one person (or group of people) they're thankful for and at least one thing they're thankful for. For their third paragraph, they can chose a person or thing to write about. These paragraphs should include reasons why they're thankful these things.

This needs to be written as a rough draft, edited by someone in the students home, and then typed. These can be printed at home or emailed to me at willarda@msd321.com.

Font type needs to be legible, and no larger than 14 pt. Final copies are due NOVEMBER 24th.

OCTOBER WRITING

This month the writing prompt is: "I was home alone on Halloween night,  My parents said I was too old to go trick-or-treating, so they stuck me with handing out the candy.  It was getting dark and I hadn't had anybody come to the door for at least fifteen minutes, so I thought it was time to turn off the lights and head upstairs to my room.  Boy, was I wrong!  Just as I opened the door to my room, i heard the strangest noise. It sounded like...."

They can either continue this story or write about being left home alone on Halloween night.  This is a fictional narrative.

This assignment is due November 3, 2015. It needs to be at least 4 paragraphs, 5-7 sentences per paragraph. Students need to write a rough draft on the paper I provided. Then a parent, older sibling or other relative needs to proof read their rough draft before they type it. It needs to be typed in 12 point font size. Double spaced is preferred, but not required.

IT'S A NEW YEAR! WELCOME!

I am so excited to be starting a new school year! This year I am new to Team 6-2. I have been teaching at Madison Middle School for two years, this is lucky year number THREE for me! I don't think there is anywhere else I would rather teach!  The administration is amazing, my colleagues are top notch, our support staff is great, and the students here are the BEST around! 

Along with being new to Team 6-2 I am also new to Science this year. I have had the opportunity to teach a few different subjects and I am really excited for Science! It's going to be an amazing year. I might be as nervous as all you sixth graders, but I am also SUPER excited!

This blog will serve as one more form of communication from school to home. Those of you who have me for English, this is where I will post our writing assignments. I will also post announcements and other things I feel are important for you to know. I usually send out an email letting you know when I have posted a new post. I don't have anything specific I will post for Science on here (yet, this may change), but I am hoping to be better at using this blog to keep you all informed on all the great things we are doing here at the school.

Good Luck Class of 2021!!

WOW! Another year has come and gone. I can't believe tomorrow is the last day of our 2014-2015 school year. It seems like just yesterday I was getting to know my new students and now, I'm preparing to say goodbye to another great class. 

I have mixed emotions right now, looking forward to a nice summer break, but not looking forward to sending another group of amazing kids on to the next grade. This year, was another learning year for me.These kids helped me more than they will ever know. Each and everyday they were there smiling and energetic to put a smile on my face as we started another day together. 

The Class of 2021 will always hold a special place in my heart. They are a phenomenal group of young people who have all the potential in the world. They will accomplish great things and I cant wait to watch! 

To my kids, I would like to thank all of you for loving and supporting me. I truly love each one of you, and I am grateful I was able to be a small part of your lives. You all know where to find me, I hope to see you all! :) Parents, you should be proud! You have raised some great kids! I feel as if they're my own! 

I hope somewhere along our journey I was able to positively impact each child's life in one way or another! Good luck class of 2021, you will go far!

Metaphor Poems

This month I am having the students write metaphor poems. Most of the work on these is being done in class, however they will need to type their metaphor poem and print it. These are due February 27th.

 This is what I expect:
3 lines
3 stanzas
comparing an abstract noun to a concrete noun (This is their metaphor)

The first line of each stanza will be a metaphor the next two lines will be describing their metaphor. Each stanza will compare the same abstract noun to a different concrete noun.

For example:

Each person doing their own thing  (lines describing it)
Busily speeding through getting to where they need to go

Life is a rodeo (Metaphor)
Sometimes we fall off and get dirty (lines describing)

There can be fun along the way

The final copy needs to be:
Typed in 12 pt. font that is legible
Have a title and the authors name
They need to add a picture of clip art to it to make it more fun to look at! :)

DECEMBER WRITING

Compare and Contrast

Due Jan. 7th

This month we are doing compare and contrast. We have started working on this paper already in class. Over the break I would like students to type their final copy and turn it in January 7th.

The paper needs to be 5 paragraphs: introduction with a thesis statement included, 3 body paragraphs that support their thesis and a concluding paragraph. Each paragraph should have 5-7 sentences.

Students made elves at school and then chose another students elf to compare theirs with.

IT'S A NEW YEAR! Welcome to Team 6-1 2014-2015

Welcome to Team 6-1    

  

         Welcome to Madison Middle School and the 2014-2015 school year. We are very excited to have YOU on our team and look forward to meeting with you on the first day of school. We will be teaching the core classes, (Language Arts, Reading, Science, Math and Social Studies), for our team.

Please come prepared with the following supplies:

·      Large 3 –ring binder or folders to organize yourself

·       pencils- (mechanical recommended) with extra lead

·      Colored pencils

·      Pencil pouch with pencil sharpener

·      2 boxes of Kleenex

·      Highlighter

·      1 glue stick

·      scissors

·      3 fine tip  Black Dry-Erase Markers

In 6^th grade, you will be changing classes each of the six periods of the day. You will receive your schedule when you come the first day of school. You will also be assigned a locker during the first week of school. We look forward to an exciting and successful year!

GOOD LUCK CLASS OF 2020!

Today was the last day of my first year of teaching. I have had mixed emotions all week leading up to this day. As the students left the school and I finished moving to my new classroom it really began to set in. I already miss those kids. I look forward to a new year and a new group of students, however Madison Middle School Team 6-1 2013-2014 students will always hold a special place in my heart.

As we went through the year together I learned as much, if not more, than the students. They helped me learn and grow as an educator. I gained experiences this year that will help shape me into a better teacher. I will always cherish this group of kids and hope to see them all progress and succeed in their lives.

I would like to thank all my students this year for putting up with me and helping me learn and grow. They were amazing, I truly do love each one of them! Also, a big thanks to the parents! I really appreciate all the work put in at home and all the years put in to raising such a fun group of kids.

Thanks for a great year! I hope everyone enjoyed it as much as I did. I am going to miss these kids!

May Book Project (1st & 2nd hour)

Caldecott Winners

Due May 22, 2014

This month our genre is Caldecott Winners. We will provide the books in class for the students to read for their summaries. 

Read five (5) Caldecott Award winning picture books and write 

summaries for each book. 

Book Project: Choose one of the three projects to complete. 

Project 1: Create a picture book of your favorite fictional novel of 

your choice. 

Requirements: at least 10 pages, your own drawings in color, and 

text on each page. Picture book needs a beginning, middle and 

end.

Project 2: Create your own graphic novel of your favorite fictional 

novel. You may use a program such as Comic Life 3 http://

www.plasq.com/products/comiclife3/win 

You are able to download a free 30 day version of this program. 

This also has the same requirements as the hand drawn picture 

book but doesn’t need to be in color. 

Project 3: Create a skit of your favorite Caldecott book. You will 

create a video outside of classroom. The video will be presented 

to the class. This project can be done as a group project with up 

to three people from our team. 

If you choose to do Project 3(video), please sign up with your 

teacher for a time slot by May 8th

Project 1 and Project 2 will be due Thursday, May 22nd

April Reading Project (1st and 2nd Hr)

Book in a Box

Due April 30th 

This month our genre is Adventure.  The reading project is book in a box.  

The Project:

Decorate a box to represent your book and fill it with objects that represent different parts of your book. 

The Details:

You can use a shoebox, oatmeal canister, coffee can or other similarly sized container for this project 

Decorate your box to go with the book.  You can draw pictures yourself or use pictures from a magazine or the internet.  Be sure to include the title and author of your book on the box as well as your name. 

Find at least 8 different objects.  You can use pictures if the object you want to use is too big to fit in the box. 

For each object, make a note card that includes the name of the object at the top and a few sentences (3-5) about how the object is important to the book. 

Tips for Success

As you read your book, keep a list of ideas for objects that you might want to use for this project. 

If you use pictures, glue them onto cardboard backings, 

Try to find at least one object for each chapter of your book.  This makes it so you are sure to have plenty of objects to choose from when you're finished reading.

Research Paper (3rd & 5th Hour)

March Writing Assignment
Researching South American / Caribbean Countries

Due MARCH 25, 2014

     This month we will be doing a research paper for our BIG writing assignment. This is the biggest writing assignment the students have had this year and seems REALLY hard to the students.  However, most of this writing assignment will be done in class IF they use their time wisely they should be able to complete it all at school. 

     Each student picked a South American or Caribbean country today to research. Their paper will be 5 paragraphs and written in MLA format.  The first paragraph is their intro paragraph which will include a thesis statement.  The next three paragraphs are body paragraphs. One will be on the history of the country, one on economics and the third on their choice (I suggested culture).  Their final paragraph is their conclusion paragraph where they should restate their thesis statement.

MARCH READING PROJECT (1st & 2nd)

NEWBERY HONOR AWARD

Due April 1, 2014

     This months genre is Newbery Honor.  Students need to choose a book that has won a Newbery award and they will make a Newbery Book Report on it. Here is a link to a list of all the Newbery Medal and Honor books from 1922-present.

     I have provided a packet with everything they will need to make their books as well as detailed instructions and a rubric so they will know exactly what they will be graded on. Here is what I am expecting:

Cover- Use template 1 in the packet. In the center of the medal, write the name of the book and its author. At the bottom write YOUR NAME. Make it creative and colorful. 

Page 1- Use template 2 in the packet. Label it SUMMARY at the top. Write a 3-4 paragraph summary of the book (fill the page). This summary should include a brief description of the following: main characters, setting, major events, the problem in the story, the solution of how the problem gets solved and the ending of the story. 

Page 2- Use template 2 in the packet. Label it WHY THIS BOOK IS A WINNER.  There must have been a good reason your book was a Newbery Medal Winner.  What was it about your book that made it so outstanding? Write a complete and thoughtful paragraph. Cite specific examples from the book to support your feelings and include the page number. 

Page 3 - Use template 3 in the packet and label it FAVORITE SCENE.  Draw a picture of your favorite scene from the book.  Write a sentence describing the scene below it.  Fill up all the white space with a colorful, detailed picture. 

If you have any questions please let me know. This isn't hard, but it does take some time. So I advised students not to save it 'til the night before. 

They also got new reading logs today that need to be SIGNED and returned APRIL 1st.
