This month the genre for our book project is Fantasy. The book project is a written book report on the Fantasy book your student has picked. Here are the directions for this project:
Write a one-page report about your Fantasy book. Include a one-paragraph summary, one paragraph about how you liked the book and one paragraph about how the book made you feel.
The directions are also on the back of the December reading log. The book project and the reading log will be due December 20th.
IMPORTANT NOTE: READING LOGS MUST BE SIGNED IN ORDER TO BE ACCEPTED.
** PLEASE make sure a parent or guardian signs your students reading log.
Thanks for all you do!
I hope your Holiday Season is great!

November Writing (3rd & 5th Hour)
This month in English we will be talking about compare and contrast. For the student's final copy writing assignment I want the students to think about the first Thanksgiving. Then compare and contrast being an Indian vs. a Pilgrim at the first Thanksgiving.
We will discuss venn diagrams in class. I would like them to start with a venn diagram, then write a rough draft. Once they have their rough draft I want an older relative to review it and help them make corrections before it is typed. When they turn in their final copy I would like to see the venn diagram, rough draft and final copy.
Once they have made their venn diagram I want them to choose which they would rather be, an Indian or a Pilgrim and give supporting details for their side as well as tell why they wouldn't want to be the other.
One thing I have noticed is a lot of them aren't using paragraphs. When you revise please make sure they're using these! It is something we will also talk about in class.
If you have any questions please let me know!
Thanks!
NOVEMBER Book Project (1st & 2nd Hour)
I can't believe it's already November! This year is flying by! This month our genre is "How To". The students need to "read" a how to book and write a step by step article explaining what they learned how to do in their book. Then they will need to choose something they love to do and prepare a short (no longer than 5 min) presentation to teach the class how to do it.
IF your child would like to do something that cannot be demonstrated in school, like shooting a gun, changing the oil on the car etc. they can have someone video their presentation. They will need to send me the video and we will watch it in class.
The presentation needs to be done by 26th of November. The reading log and article will be due the day we come back from Thanksgiving break. Please let me know if there are any questions about this!
Thanks!

Halloween Writing (3rd & 5th Hour)
This month I am starting a new writing project. Students will have one "bigger" writing assignment that I will have them do a rough draft and final copy of. I have asked them to have a parent, older sibling or other relative read over it before they type their final copies.
Final copies can be sent to me via email: willarda@msd321.com if you don't want to print them.
This month their writing prompt is: "I was home alone on Halloween night, My parents said I was too old to go trick-or-treating, so they stuck me with handing out the candy. It was getting dark and I hadn't had anybody come to the door for at least fifteen minutes, so I thought it was time to turn off the lights and head upstairs to my room. Boy, was I wrong! Just as I opened the door to my room, i heard the strangest noise. It sounded like....
They can either continue this story or write about being left home alone on Halloween night. This is a fictional narrative.
This assignment is due October 24, 2013. They are to hand write at least the front page of their paper that has the prompt on it, if they skip lines they need to fill the front and back. If you have any questions feel free to email me!
Thanks!

October Book Project (1st & 2nd Hour)
&
This month our genre is Poetry. For the BIG book project each child has picked a poem to memorize and recite in front of the class. We will start reciting poems on October 14th. Each student that completes this task will be invited to our "Poetry and Pancakes" party at the end of October.
Along with memorizing a poem each student is to read a poetry book and their choice book. They will fill out a summary for each on the back of their reading log as they did last month.
Each month I expect your child to read for at least 30 minutes 20 days. Their reading log has 5 extra pictures, if they read extra days they may receive up to 5 extra credit points. I want the students reading as much as possible, therefore I don't allow them to read an hour in one day and count it for two days.
Their reading log and book summaries are due OCTOBER 30, 2013.
